Technical details

Collecting data

LicenseWatch is capable of collecting inventory data from several technologies with its several agents and connectors.

LicenseWatch System Architecture

LicenseWatch System consists of:

  • LicenseWatch Server (Management Console). This is a normal web server which typically is installed on a server internally in the organization. It is also possible to host the LicenseWatch server in a extern hosting center (e.g. cloud solution)

  • LicenseWatch agents or LicenseWatch connectors for collecting inventory data.

  • LicenseWatch data storage. All the collected data is stored in a SQL database.

LicenseWatch Architecture

LicenseWatch Server (management Console)

LicenseWatch Server is installed on a Microsoft Windows Server (2003 or newer) and uses the IIS (Internet Information Service). The LicenseWatch System is managed via Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 7, 8, 9 or 10) from any Windows client PC.

LicenseWatch Agents (for collecting inventory data)

  • LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows agent
    • LicenseWatch supports any editions of: Windows 7 / 8 / Vista / XP
    • Agent is started with a command (user login script), or installed directly on client PC with an .MSI file and thereby the agent is started at login (just like user login script). The agent sends the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.

  • LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows Server agent/service
    • LicenseWatch supports any editions of: Windows 2012 / 2008 R2 / 2008 / 2003 R2 / 2003
    • A normal Windows service is installed and makes the agent run a few minutes daily. The agent sends the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.

  • LicenseWatch Apple Mac OS X agent
    • LicenseWatch supports any version of: OS X Mountain Lion / Lion / Snow Leopard / Leopard
    • Agent is installed with a file and thereby the agent is started at login (just like user login script). The agent sends the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.
    • LicenseWatch Linux RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu
    • LicenseWatch supports: RedHat ver. 5.* or newer, Fedora/Ubuntu ver. 10.* or newer
o Agent file is executed with a script and thereby the agent is sending the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.

  • LicenseWatch Sun Solaris
    • LicenseWatch supports: Solaris version 5.11 or newer
    • Agent file is executed with a script and thereby the agent is sending the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.

  • LicenseWatch IBM AIX
    • LicenseWatch supports: AIX version 6.1 or newer
    • Agent file is executed with a script and thereby the agent is sending the collected data via http (or https) to a web site on the LicenseWatch Server.

LicenseWatch Connectors (for collecting inventory data)

  • LicenseWatch Microsoft Active Directory LDAP connector
    • A normal Microsoft AD (Active Directory) domain user account reads OU (Organizational Unit) names and detailed information about domain users (e.g.: first name, last name, department, e- mail address, phone number, etc.) in order to organize collected data and get better data into the LicenseWatch system

  • LicenseWatch Microsoft SCCM 2012 / 2007 / SMS 2003 connector
    • LicenseWatch supports any version of: SCCM 2012 / 2007 / SMS 2003
    • A “read only” database connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the SCCM / SMS SQL database in order to collect inventory data. Notice that the earlier mentioned “LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows agent” is not needed when collecting inventory data directly from SCCM / SMS.

  • LicenseWatch Symantec Altiris System Management connector
    • LicenseWatch supports: Altiris version 6.* or newer
    • A “read only” database connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the Altiris SQL database in order to collect inventory data. Notice that the earlier mentioned “LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows agent” is not needed when collecting inventory data directly from Altiris.

  • LicenseWatch Matrix42 Empirum Inventory connector
    • LicenseWatch supports: Empirum version 14.* or newer
    • A “read only” database connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the Empirum SQL database in order to collect inventory data. Notice that the earlier mentioned “LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows agent” is not needed when collecting inventory data directly from Empirum.

  • LicenseWatch Oracle SQL Database Server connector
    • LicenseWatch supports any version of Oracle installed on Microsoft Windows Server
    • A “read only” database connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the Oracle SQL Server in order to collect data about instance names and installed modules.

  • LicenseWatch VMware Virtualization connector
    • LicenseWatch supports: vCenter / ESX / ESXi version 3.5 or newer
    • A “read only” https connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the VMware vCenter / ESX / ESXi. In other words – LicenseWatch just require a “read only“ user name and password for VMware vSphere.

  • LicenseWatch Microsoft Hyper-V connector
    • LicenseWatch supports Hyper-V R2
(part of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard / Enterprise / Datacenter)
    • A “read only” http connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the Hyper-V server via Windows Remote Management and Windows PowerShell.

  • LicenseWatch Citrix Presentation Server or XenApp connector
    • LicenseWatch supports any editions of Presentation Server version 4.5 / 5.0 and XenApp version 6.0
    • A normal Windows service is installed on one (per farm) Citrix server with Citrix management console and the service read information about: “Citrix Published Application names”, “Citrix Published Desktop names”, and the “user names” that have access to the published software on the Citrix. In order for the LicenseWatch service to read data from the Citrix farm, it is only required for the service account to have Citrix administrator “View only” privileges. All the collected data is send directly to the LicenseWatch SQL database via a database connection that have database owner rights on the LicenseWatch database.

  • LicenseWatch Citrix EdgeSight connector
    • LicenseWatch supports: EdgeSight version 6.0
    • A “read only” database connection is established between the LicenseWatch Server and the EdgeSight SQL database in order to collect usage data. Notice that the earlier mentioned “LicenseWatch Microsoft Windows agent” is not needed for Citrix terminal users when collecting usage data directly from EdgeSight.

LicenseWatch Data Storage

All data that LicenseWatch has collected is stored in a database on a Microsoft SQL Server (2005, 2008 or 2012 any version) and typically each computer that LicenseWatch collects data from will consume approximately 2 MB of space in the database.
